Vis Dev: Get Out of Nowhere

‘Get Out of Nowhere’ Vis Dev

‘Get Out of Nowhere’ is a sci-fi comedy aimed at middlegrade - tween readers.

Esther the ghost-seeing goth girl and Sina the geeky, energetic brother always had trouble fitting in, but the siblings soon discover they’re not that weird after they move into a domed town filled with mutants hidden from the outside world. The siblings befriend a cactus girl who dreams of seeing the outside, and with the help of a mad scientist and an alien in disguise, together they try to uncover the secrets within the town and escape from Nowhere.

The themes that will be explored will be loneliness and belonging, identity, and fighting injustices and societal struggles to pave a better path for all. The different constructions of family will be explored; single parent, adopted, found family. ‘Get Out of Roswell’ seeks to build confidence in kids by accepting differences in others and being proud of their uniqueness (gender, culture, seeing disabilities as people with valid and different perspectives, etc.), encourage confidence in exploration and fascination with the world around them, and show that everyone has value.

Growing up, my partner and I were often bullied for who we are; based on how we looked like (not being typically feminine or masculine enough, what we wore, etc.), on our culture (Filipino and Russian immigrant parents),for what we enjoyed (being labeled weird, geek, nerd, etc.),and that we had to keep the fact that we were LGBTQ+ a secret from not only society but our friends and families along with living with our own mental health struggles (anxiety and ADHD). We eventually found friends we could be ourselves around, and these support systems are vital to life amongst ingrained societal biases.

Kids want to be scared (FNAF, Poppy’s Playtime, Scary Youtube videos), and the animated shows that are out today don’t have that same creepy feeling of shows of past years had (Courage the Cowardly Dog, Invader Zim, Are You Afraid of the Dark, etc.). These past shows have become iconic in adults’ memories. The current lineup is lacking that show that unites a generation of people with the scares that last. ‘Get Out of Nowhere’ would have that creepy edge that will feed a kid’s curiosity for the dark and mysterious; to show kids that life can be scary but they have the power to overcome it.

I want to reach out to all the kids considered weird (especially girls since I grew up as a weird girl), and that it’s okay to be different and you will find your place. I want to show kids that the world has a lot of mysteries and unexplainable phenomena in this world, and to help spark their imagination beyond what they think is possible. ‘Nowhere’ seeks to build confidence in kids by accepting differences in others and being proud of their uniqueness, encourage exploration and fascination with the world around them, and show that everyone has value.
